چکیده

The Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC) is a purpose-built instrument to demonstrate technological instrumental concepts initially developed for the exoplanet direct imaging field. Located downstream of current II adaptive optic (AO) system, KPIC contains fiber injection unit (FIU) capable combining high-contrast capability AOs system with high dispersion spectroscopy resolution infrared spectrograph (NIRSPEC). Deployed at in September 2018, this has already been used acquire high-resolution spectra (R > 30,000) multiple targets interest. In near term, it will be spectrally characterize known directly imaged exoplanets low-mass brown dwarf companions visible northern hemisphere spectral enough enable spin planetary radial velocity measurements as well Doppler atmospheric weather phenomena. Here, we present design FIU, unique calibration procedures needed operate single-mode performance.

Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer

The advent of fast low-noise infrared cameras (IR-APD), the rapid maturing of efficient wavefront sensing techniques (Pyramid/Zernike), small inner working angle coronagraphs (vortex, HLC, PIAA) and associated low-order wavefront sensors, as well as recent breakthroughs in Doppler imaging techniques applied to brown dwarfs and exoplanets, open new avenues complementary to first and second-gener...

A dedicated high-resolution PET imager for plant sciences.

PET provides an in vivo molecular and functional imaging capability that could be valuable for studying the interaction of plants in changing environments at the whole-plant level. We have developed a dedicated plant PET imager housed in a plant growth chamber (PGC), which provides a fully controlled environment. The system currently contains two types of scintillation detector modules from com...

Spectrograph Imager on Keck

Using the Echellete Spectrograph Imager (ESI) on the Keck II 10-m telescope we have measured the redshifts of the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts GRB990506 and GRB000418, z = 1.30658 ± 0.00004 and 1.1181 ± 0.0001, respectively. Thanks to the excellent spectral resolution of ESI (λ/∆λ = 13000) we resolved the [O II] 3727 doublet in both cases. The measured redshift of GRB990506 is the highest ...

Discovery and spectroscopy of the young jovian planet 51 Eri b with the Gemini Planet Imager.

Directly detecting thermal emission from young extrasolar planets allows measurement of their atmospheric compositions and luminosities, which are influenced by their formation mechanisms. Using the Gemini Planet Imager, we discovered a planet orbiting the ~20-million-year-old star 51 Eridani at a projected separation of 13 astronomical units. Near-infrared observations show a spectrum with str...

The Integral Field Unit for the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager at Keck II

We report on the design, development and commissioning of an Integral Field Unit (IFU) that has been built for the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) at the W.M. Keck Observatory. This image slicer–based IFU, which was commissioned in the spring of 2004 covers a contiguous field of 5.65 x 4.0 arcseconds in 5 slices that are 1.13 arcseconds wide. The IFU passes a spectral range of 0.39-1.1...
